City Veins – Limited Edition Prints – FREE TUTORIAL – Luminosity Mask – Read below

The Shot & Technique
Captured in Dubai from the 42nd floor. A black and white interpretation of the cold city and its pulsing veins. Down below is Sheikh Zayed Road one the most important roads in all of Middle East. It runs through all emirates down to the border of Oman.

The photo is a single shot exposure and processed in PS6 with luminosity mask techniques. I wrote a lengthy and detailed tutorial about how I process my photos, which is available on my website here: http://goo.gl/JOZgE8. On my website (www.andredistel.com) you will also find another tutorial about manually blending different exposures for one final image. All free for you to use!

The Shot & News

Remember my print sale until December 14th! 25% off all prints. Simply use “xmas25″ as promo code during checkout or contact me directly for ordering offline. I have added also “Galleries by Theme” as additional entry point on my website: http://andredistel.photoshelter.com/gallery-collection/Gallery-by-Theme/C0000PeSdkDyZWUw

Sydney Moments is part of Andre Distel Limited Edition Gold 100 Print Series. It was a short walk to capture this shot. The building across on the pier is the hotel I stayed at in Sydney. I actually wanted to get a different shot, one that I saw in the hotel lobby, but later found out to be photoshopped. The angle the images was taken on is impossible to reach, except you are standing right in the water. Anyhow, I like how the evening and colors played out on this one with some dramatic cloud coverage over the harbor area. One more for my growing Sydney Gallery.

Much of the translation of my website is done and most pages are now available in English and German language. I’ll keep adding German to other pages, as I find time to do so. In the meantime, feel free to check my website for any typos or other errors :).

I am thinking about creating a German or English Tutorial about how I use luminosity masks and my workflow in general. Would anyone be interested in learning more about that?

Rolling Hills of Maui – Limited Edition Print

I have started this a while ago on Facebook and will try to follow through with this on Google+ and my website. Posting in English and German language. I am bilingual, so why not make use of it :-)

The Shot
When you were asking for photos of Hawaii this is not what you necessarily expected, is it? We drove the entire Hana Highway and thought it was a bit overrated. There are some pretty sights on the way but we found that the Southeastern side of Maui is mentioned nowhere and is totally underrated. This was taken during sunset time on a very lonely stretch from Hana all the way back through southeastern Maui.

—————-

Hidden Castle – Bonn, Germany – Limited Edition Print

The Shot
I took this shot a few weeks ago and was one of the first serious shots with the D800 in combination with the Nikon 70-200 f/4. What a beautiful and sharp lens that is. I instantly fell in love with it and can't stop using it. I think you will see more telephoto landscape photos in the near future.

This mountain area is right across from our house. Just walking down to the river and taking the shot. Luckily I can decide a few minutes prior if it's worthwhile visiting or not, depending on the light. On that particular it was definitely worth it and the last rays of sunshine hit the trees and just made the whole variety of greens pop. Of course the castle, tucked away in the tree is the highlight of this shot. It's in perfect condition and can be visited by climbing up the mountain from the left. To the right side of this shot is an even higher peak with even older ruins on top and steep cliff.

Bryce Canyon – UT, USA 2010 – Limited Edition Series

The Shot & News

Much has happened in the last three years. This photo was taken with the Nikon D60 back then. I had about 9 months of very limited DSLR experience back then but a lot of fun exploring my camera and various techniques. I made a step up to the D7000 in October of 2011 and not only my technique had improved but also my picture quality. I had the best lenses available for the DX Format and it has served me well over the last couple of years. I learned to manually blend and post process in LR4 and PS with luminance masking techniques and filters but have felt recently that I have reached the maximum potential of the D7000 for my style of work. I was able to create beautiful large prints and even a National Geographic Cover Shot with my beloved Nikon and print sales have gone up inside and outside of Germany. Now, I am making another leap in my photography and have the D800 on order with a couple of new FX lenses, which should serve me well over the next two years . So, for the next 2-3 weeks, I am without a camera but look forward to a new challenge with the incredible demanding D800.

Lavender Bay – Sydney, Australia – Limited Edition Series

The Shot

Inspired by a scene from +Ken Duncan Gallery  as seen in his gallery in Sydney. Being only my second time in Sydney, I had no idea that Lavender Bay even exists. It is fairly easy to reach though from the main ferry terminal at the harbor.

I don’t expect this shot to take off as much as my last one did, but hey, it doesn’t really matter that much :). I have a few more shots from this location with various angles but there was this dog always running into my photos. Cute dog though, but not really helping to achieve my goal.

Technical Stuff:
Nikon D7000
Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8
+Induro  AT-114
Vanguard SBH-250 ballhead
1 Exposure
Global adjustments in Lightroom 4
Fine-tune in PS6

Anyone interested in new photography gear? I am thinking about selling part of my photography gear to eventually focus on full frame only for my landscape work.

Anyone interested in the following:
Nikon D7000 (22 months old)
Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (5 months old)

These are the best lenses currently available for DX Format. Send me a message if you are interested.

I will be in Canada shortly just in case one of my Canadian friends is interested .

Sydney Splendor – Sydney, Australia – Limited Edition Series

The Shot

This is a manual exposure blend from 4 individual images. One for the sky above the bridge, one for the water, one for the city and one for the sun. All just taken seconds apart with different settings. I used Luminosity Masking Techniques by +Tony Kuyper and +Sean Bagshaw  to blend the exposures and make use of a non-destructive workflow. Ever since I started using the luminance masks, my file size has gone up and exceeds most of the time 1GB. As I don’t take that many images, it’s not a big problem for me. I am in the quality of the quantity department of photographers.

Singapore Supertrees – Singapore – Limited Edition Series Print

What better place to take photos than Singapore? And what to photograph if you have only one night to take photos? Of course, the Singapore Supertrees.

The Shot

At the time I took this shot, the Supertrees were fairly new and they still are. It was one of the first nights with the Supertree Grove Music Light Show, which was truly amazing. It felt like being in the middle of Avatar and I just waited for the trees to literally move around. Well, that didn’t happen of course but still, check them out when you are there. They are located in the Gardens by the Bay behind the Marina Bay Sands (MBS).

A Limited Edition Print (25 only in total) of this image is available here on my website http://andredistel.photoshelter.com/image/I0000J5c6214QRkM

Be advised that Google Chrome may cause a breakdown in styles during the checkout, which has to do with Google’s security feature in Chrome browser. However, everything works perfectly fine. All other browsers should work pretty well.

To get this shot I used my

+Induro AT-114 and Vanguard SBH-250

Processing

Imported into Lightroom 4 with basic global adjustments
Fine-tuning in PS6
All lights and colors are “natural”. I only made slight adjustments to contrast and sharpness

The Great Wall – China – Open Edition Series

The Shot

Finally getting around to look more into some of my images from China earlier this year. I hired a local private guide to take me out to the more remote areas of the wall with the original parts from the Ming Dynasty. Old Shanghai – Shanghai, China – Open Edition Print

The Shot

I had a few lucky clear nights in Shanghai, which is rather unusual. Usually the skyline is dominated by heavy smog, which makes taking photos a lot harder. This photo was taken on the Pudong side of Shanghai. I was amazed to see Colonial style buildings in Shanghai, but they make a great contrast to the new and fancy buildings in the background.

The quality of the image might appear very low on the web, as I had to download it from Facebook (currently not at my own computer).

Mysterious Mornings – Siebengebierge, Bonn, Germany – Open Edition

Mysterious Mornings – Siebengebierge, Bonn, Germany – Open Edition

The Shot

I got up at 3:45 am to be on top of the Mountain by about 4:45am. There is a Behind-the-Scenes shot on my Facebook Page from May 25 with the full moon bright and early. This photo was taken at about 5:25 in the morning when the fog finally started to move in from the North through the Siebengebierge. The long exposure 25sec allowed from some cool cloud movement. The fog layer on the rhine river behind the mountain was unbelievably thick that morning.

If you don’t want to get up that early, you can still buy a print of this surreal morning in Bonn :)

To get this shot I used my Nikon D7000, 17-55mm f/2.8 lens, LEE Filters 0.9 GND hard, Induro Pro Tripods, Monopods & Heads AT-114 and Vanguard SBH-250
